Police Disrupt Climate Activists' Blockade in Berlin, 30 Arrested

Mon 2nd Jun, 2025

In a significant move against climate activism, the Berlin police intervened to halt a blockade organized by the climate protection group, Neue Generation, on Sunday evening. The protest took place outside the Axel Springer printing facility located on Brunsbütteler Damm, where over 30 activists were detained.

The protesters aimed to obstruct access to the printing house, reportedly bringing along a delivery vehicle and equipment intended for their blockade efforts. Authorities noted that the activists had plans to secure the facility's gates to prevent entry and exit.

Following the arrests, law enforcement officials indicated that a decision regarding the continued detention of the activists would be made on Monday. Representatives from Axel Springer declined to comment on the incident when approached for a statement.

Neue Generation, which emerged as a successor to the previous climate group, Letzte Generation, had announced a series of protests in Berlin just days earlier. They outlined their intent to launch a 'wave of resistance' with a focus on demonstrations at the Axel Springer headquarters in Kreuzberg. The group's objective is to advocate for an alternative environmental policy and enhanced democratic engagement.

The original initiative, Letzte Generation, gained attention starting in 2022 due to its disruptive blockade actions across Germany, which were prompted by a hunger strike in Berlin. Earlier this year, the group signaled a strategic shift, leading to its rebranding as Neue Generation.

This latest demonstration reflects ongoing tensions surrounding climate activism and the measures taken by authorities to maintain public order amid escalating protest activities. The police response to the blockade reinforces the contentious relationship between climate activists and law enforcement, as both sides navigate the complex landscape of environmental advocacy and public safety.
