Poland Plans to Extend Border Controls Beyond Initial Month

Thu 24th Jul, 2025

Poland's government is likely to prolong its border controls with Germany and Lithuania, which were implemented on July 7, for more than the initially planned month, according to the country's Interior Minister. The controls, which are part of the Schengen Agreement framework, allow for temporary reinstatement of border checks for up to 30 days under specific circumstances.

After two weeks of enforcement, the Polish border protection agency reported that 100 individuals were denied entry for attempting to cross the border unlawfully from Germany or Lithuania. Throughout this period, approximately 280,000 people and over 134,000 vehicles were subjected to random inspections.

Poland's Interior Minister, Tomasz Siemoniak, indicated that the ongoing border checks would continue due to the increasing challenges posed by irregular migration. He highlighted that recent actions by Russia and Belarus have been perceived as a hybrid threat, utilizing migrants as a means to exert pressure on Poland and the European Union. According to Siemoniak, migrants are being brought to the Polish border after arriving in Moscow with Russian visas, facilitated by Belarusian authorities.

In response to rising concerns about security at its borders, Germany has also reinstated border controls with Poland since October 2023. The German government acted following pressure from right-wing citizen groups that accused the Polish state of improperly managing migration and failing to uphold border security.

These developments come amid a broader discussion in Europe regarding migration policies and border security, with various countries reassessing their approaches in light of recent geopolitical tensions.
