Berlin - Following the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, tensions related to the Middle East conflict have escalated in the German capital. In response, the Berlin police have established a dedicated investigative unit to address crimes related to anti-Israel sentiments. Since the beginning of this conflict, this unit, known as BAO Nahost (Special Organizational Unit), has recorded alarming statistics.
According to reports, as of now, the police have processed nearly 9,802 investigations targeting individuals accused of pro-Palestinian offenses. In total, they have identified approximately 3,090 suspects. A police spokesperson noted that a significant portion of the cases involve offenses related to assembly events, including propaganda-related crimes and resisting law enforcement.
The nature of these anti-Israel crimes is concerning, with the police detailing the types of offenses being investigated. The most common charges include:
The situation escalated recently when, during a demonstration organized by anti-Israel activists, a police officer was severely injured. The event, which was centered around the "Nakba" commemoration, was intended to be stationary following a court order that prohibited a march. Approximately 1,200 protesters faced off against 600 police officers and water cannons.
As tensions rose around 6 PM at the intersection of Blücherstraße and Fontanepromenade in Kreuzberg, demonstrators attempted to breach police lines. Officers were met with a barrage of objects, including cans and stones, and some were even sprayed with red paint. During the chaos, a police officer was pulled into the crowd and trampled, resulting in a broken arm.
In addition to the injured officer, reports indicate that multiple police personnel and an unspecified number of demonstrators sustained injuries during the confrontation. The ongoing violence and hostility towards Israel continue to pose significant challenges for law enforcement in Berlin.
