OpenAI Developing New Social Media Platform to Rival Elon Musk's X

Wed 16th Apr, 2025

The artificial intelligence-focused company OpenAI is reportedly working on a new social media platform that could compete directly with Elon Musk's rebranded Twitter, now known as X. According to sources cited by The Verge, the project is still in its early stages, but a prototype has already been developed.

This internal version of the platform reportedly focuses on the image generation capabilities of ChatGPT and includes a social feed feature. However, it remains uncertain whether this initiative will evolve into a standalone application or be integrated as a component of the existing ChatGPT services.

OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, has sought external feedback on the project, indicating that the company is open to insights as it navigates the early development phase. If successful, this new social media venture could intensify the ongoing rivalry between Musk and OpenAI. Musk has previously attempted to legally prevent OpenAI from shifting towards a profit-oriented business model.

Currently, OpenAI operates under the oversight of a non-profit organization. Musk, along with other investors, made a substantial offer of $97.4 billion to acquire OpenAI, which was ultimately rejected. This ongoing tension is compounded by Musk's recent decision to integrate X under his AI company, xAI, which directly competes with OpenAI. This integration simplifies the legal framework for using user-generated content on X for training AI models.

In a parallel move, Musk's new AI project, named Grok, is closely linked to X, further establishing a competitive landscape against OpenAI's offerings. Additionally, the Meta corporation, which owns Facebook, also utilizes public content from its platforms to train its AI software, Meta AI. Such AI programs require vast amounts of data for effective training.
