Opening of Public Swimming Pools in NRW Marks Start of Summer Season

Thu 1st May, 2025

North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) is welcoming the summer season with the opening of numerous public swimming pools, coinciding with the arrival of warm temperatures reaching up to 28 degrees Celsius. The air is filled with the familiar scents of sunscreen, fried food, and chlorine, inviting residents to enjoy a variety of aquatic activities. From thrilling water slides to diving boards and relaxing on sun loungers, the options for recreation are plentiful.

As of May 1, many outdoor pools across NRW have officially opened their gates. However, visitors should be prepared for slightly cooler water temperatures this year. Due to rising energy costs, some facilities are not heating their pools as extensively as in previous seasons.

In a positive development for pool operations, the shortage of lifeguards--a significant issue in the past--has improved. The German Society for Bathing (DGfdB) reports that, while some pools still face challenges in staffing, the situation is not as dire as it was a few years ago. Successful recruitment campaigns and increased media attention have contributed to this turnaround. Previous shortages during the pandemic forced many pools to remain closed.

In addition to the excitement surrounding the open pools, local residents are eager to take part in swimming courses, which have seen increased demand. Concerns persist, however, regarding the condition of some aging facilities and the long wait times for swimming lessons.

As part of the opening festivities, several swimming pools across NRW are now operational. Here are some of the locations:

  • Bochum: Freibad Werne (Bramheide 17), open from 8 AM to 7 PM
  • Borken: Aquarius Freibad (Parkstr. 20), open from 10 AM to 7 PM
