Mon 24th Feb, 2025

Japan's northern regions are experiencing unprecedented levels of snowfall, with some areas reporting snow depths exceeding three meters. In the wake of a severe winter storm, weather authorities have issued warnings for additional snowfall across several prefectures.

As of Monday morning, the northern city of Aomori recorded a staggering five meters of snow, while Uonuma in Niigata Prefecture saw 3.81 meters and Tadami in Fukushima Prefecture measured 3.13 meters. The Japan Meteorological Agency cautioned residents in central Japan's Niigata, Ishikawa, and Nagano prefectures, as well as western areas including Hiroshima and Shimane, to brace for further snow accumulation.

Alongside the heavy snowfall, the agency warned of potential avalanches, icy road conditions, and frozen water pipes. The ongoing winter weather has already resulted in significant disruptions, with reports indicating that over 20 fatalities have occurred this month due to the severe weather conditions.

In Aomori Prefecture alone, nine individuals have lost their lives as a direct result of the heavy snow, with six fatalities reported during snow removal operations on roofs. Additionally, three hotel staff members in Fukushima were discovered deceased after going missing while conducting maintenance work on a hot spring facility in the mountains.

The extreme winter weather has not only caused tragic loss of life but has also led to transportation challenges across the affected regions. The coastal areas along the Sea of Japan typically experience snowy winters, but this year has seen record-breaking snowfall in multiple cities, which has exacerbated the situation.

With the forecast predicting more snow in the coming days, residents are urged to remain vigilant and take precautions to ensure their safety during this harsh winter period.
