Northern Ireland Faces Ongoing Unrest: 32 Police Officers Injured

Thu 12th Jun, 2025

Ballymena, Northern Ireland - The situation in Northern Ireland continues to escalate as unrest persists for the third consecutive night, triggered by an alleged assault on a teenage girl. Authorities have characterized the violence as racially motivated.

Reports from the PA news agency indicate that police officers in Ballymena have been subjected to violent attacks involving petrol bombs, axes, and bricks. In the neighboring town of Larne, a recreation center was set ablaze, which had been housing Roma families who were forced to flee their homes due to the ongoing violence.

Video footage circulating on social media depicts the fire, with masked youths reportedly smashing the windows of the building prior to the arson. Fortunately, the families were not present at the time of the incident.

Earlier in the week, the police reported 32 of their personnel had sustained injuries as a result of the unrest. Numerous buildings and businesses have been set on fire, and vehicles have been vandalized, with hundreds of masked individuals engaging in rioting in the town of Ballymena, which has a population of approximately 25,000. Law enforcement has cordoned off streets and deployed water cannons and plastic bullets in response to the disturbances. The number of injuries reported by Thursday morning remains unclear.

The unrest erupted following an alleged attempted sexual assault involving two 14-year-olds against a teenage girl. According to the 'Sunday World', the minors involved are reportedly of Romanian descent and have denied the accusations in court. Initially, there were peaceful protests and a vigil, but tensions escalated on Monday, leading to further disturbances in Belfast and other cities across Northern Ireland.

Michelle O'Neill, the Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland, condemned the violence, stating it is unequivocally rooted in racism.

Multiple arrests have been made in connection with the riots. Chief Constable Jon Boutcher expressed solidarity with those affected by the violence, affirming that the police are prepared to reinforce their presence with officers from England and Wales if necessary.

In a collective statement, all parties within the Northern Ireland Assembly called for calm, urging the public to reject the divisive agenda propagated by a minority of destructive individuals. Regarding the alleged sexual assault, the statement emphasized the importance of allowing the judicial process to take its course in order to thoroughly investigate this heinous crime. The statement further cautioned that those attempting to exploit the situation to incite racial tensions are not genuinely interested in justice.
