North Korean Naval Destroyer Damaged During Inaugural Launch

Thu 22nd May, 2025

North Korea's state media reported a mishap during the launch of a new naval destroyer, resulting in damage to the vessel. The incident has drawn criticism from the country's leader, Kim Jong Un, who characterized it as a severe lapse in judgment and a 'criminal act' that undermines the nation's dignity.

According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim Jong Un was present at the launch and observed the vessel sustaining damage to its lower sections. The leader has since mandated that repairs be made urgently in preparation for an upcoming meeting of the ruling Workers' Party Central Committee slated for late June. He emphasized that rectifying the issues with the destroyer transcends practical considerations and directly relates to the state's authority.

This destroyer is part of the newly introduced Choe Hyon-class, with the latest model weighing approximately 5,000 tons. Just a month prior, North Korea showcased this class with a successful test that involved the firing of various missiles, including supersonic and strategic cruise missiles, as well as anti-air systems. The damaged ship is reportedly the second of its kind under construction at the port city of Chongjin.

Analysts have noted that the launch method employed for this ship--side-launching from the quay--was unprecedented for North Korea, suggesting potential limitations at the construction site. A report from the US-based think tank 38 North indicated that the quay's lack of an incline may have necessitated this approach.

In the wake of the launch incident, North Korea has conducted missile tests, with South Korea's defense ministry reporting multiple unidentified cruise missiles fired towards the East Sea. These missile launches occurred shortly after the news of the damaged destroyer, with South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff confirming detection near South Hamgyong Province. Both South Korean and American intelligence agencies are currently analyzing the specifics of these missile tests.

It is important to note that while UN resolutions prohibit North Korea from launching or testing ballistic missiles of any range, cruise missile tests do not fall under this ban, allowing the regime to pursue such activities without direct international repercussions.
