Death Toll from Flooding in Nigeria Rises to 150 Amid Ongoing Rescue Efforts

Sun 1st Jun, 2025

The ongoing rescue operations in Mokwa, a city in central Nigeria, have revealed a tragic increase in the number of fatalities caused by severe flooding, now reported at 150. This unfortunate update comes after heavy rainfall resulted in devastating floods that swept away homes and their inhabitants.

On Wednesday, continuous downpours led to significant flooding in the market town, severely damaging the area. Over 50 homes were destroyed, with residents reportedly caught in the sudden deluge. The full extent of the disaster has only become apparent in the days following the rainfall, as rescue teams continue to search for missing individuals.

As of Saturday, the efforts to locate those trapped or missing were still ongoing, with authorities announcing the updated death toll as search operations progressed. However, the number of individuals still unaccounted for remains uncertain, raising concerns about the possibility of further casualties.

Flood-related fatalities are a recurrent issue in Nigeria, where various regions face frequent flooding. Last year alone, over 600 lives were lost across several of Nigeria's 36 states due to similar incidents, displacing approximately 1.3 million residents as a result of heavy rainfall.

The Nigerian government is faced with the challenge of addressing the aftermath of such disasters, exacerbated by climate-related factors. As rescue and recovery efforts continue, the need for improved infrastructure and disaster preparedness becomes increasingly evident. Local and national authorities are urged to take proactive measures to mitigate the impacts of future flooding events.
