Pistorius Advocates Swift Implementation of New Military Service Model

Fri 11th Apr, 2025

The acting Minister of Defense, Boris Pistorius, has expressed a strong commitment to rapidly establish a new model of military service in Germany. He indicated that significant groundwork has been laid over the past months, enabling the new government to take immediate action once formed. The Federal Minister emphasized the goal of completing the legislative process promptly to begin accepting and training the first military service recruits within the current year.

In collaboration with the Union party, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) aims to introduce a military service model that initially relies on volunteer participation. According to Pistorius, all males aged 18 and older will be required to fill out a questionnaire. The Bundeswehr will then reach out to suitable candidates to invite them to participate in voluntary basic military service. Pistorius expressed confidence that an attractive military service offering would draw sufficient volunteers. However, he noted that should volunteer numbers fall short, the possibility of mandatory conscription for young men might need to be reconsidered, although he does not foresee such a necessity in the immediate future.

Military conscription in Germany was suspended in July 2011, effectively abolishing both military and civil service, as essential structures were dismantled. Despite the potential revival of conscription in cases of heightened tension or defense emergencies, both the SPD and the Union agree that the Bundeswehr, including its reserves, needs to expand. Pistorius acknowledged, however, that the current capacity levels differ significantly from those observed three decades ago, with shortages in accommodation, training facilities, instructors, and equipment being prominent issues.

He anticipates that the new military service model could see an influx of around 5,000 additional service members in its first year of implementation.
