New Bonobo Baby Makes Debut at Cologne Zoo

Thu 8th May, 2025

A delightful addition has arrived at the Cologne Zoo, as a baby bonobo named Milumbe was recently introduced to the public. This charming infant, characterized by her small stature and curious demeanor, marks an exciting milestone for her mother, Malaika, who is experiencing motherhood for the first time.

Milumbe was born on a Thursday and has already begun to explore her new environment, capturing the attention of zoo visitors. Malaika, at nearly 15 years old, has been well-prepared for this role, having observed the nurturing behaviors of other bonobo females within her social group. The father of the new arrival is Kivu, an 18-year-old bonobo.

Bonobos, often recognized as one of humanity's closest relatives, are native to the rainforests of the Congo Basin. They were classified as a distinct species in 1933, and they exhibit notable behavioral differences from chimpanzees, particularly in their social dynamics. Unlike the male-dominated hierarchies observed in chimpanzee groups, bonobo societies are characterized by female dominance, with females often playing a leading role in social interactions.

Currently, the Cologne Zoo is home to six bonobos, and the birth of Milumbe adds to the zoo's efforts in conservation and education about this remarkable species. As visitors come to witness this new life, the zoo aims to raise awareness about the importance of preserving the natural habitats of bonobos and the challenges they face in the wild.
