National Veteran's Day: Flags Raised in Brandenburg to Honor Soldiers

Fri 13th Jun, 2025

On the inaugural National Veteran's Day this Sunday, flags will be flown across Brandenburg in recognition of the service of Bundeswehr soldiers, both active and retired. The initiative, announced by Interior Minister René Wilke, aims to honor the contributions of military personnel throughout Germany.

This national observance is designed to acknowledge the sacrifices made by those who have served in the Bundeswehr, with a central event planned near the Reichstag building in Berlin. While this day is meant to celebrate the valor of veterans, it is noteworthy that some military opposition groups have announced plans to protest during the celebrations.

The Brandenburg State Parliament will also hold a commemorative event on Wednesday, June 18, at 10:00 AM. This ceremony will feature speeches from significant figures including Landtag President Ulrike Liedtke, Minister Wilke, and Manfred Schreiber, the Vice President of the German Bundeswehr Reservists Association.

In Germany, approximately ten million individuals have completed military service or have been professional or temporary soldiers, with around 500,000 having served in missions abroad, such as in Afghanistan, Mali, or Bosnia-Herzegovina. The National Veteran's Day is set to become an annual observance, reinforcing the commitment to recognize and honor those who have served in the armed forces.

This day is an important step towards fostering a greater appreciation for the contributions of military personnel and aims to strengthen the bonds between the military and the civilian population.
