Heidelberg Court Sentences Mother to 7.5 Years for Infant's Death

Mon 19th May, 2025

In a tragic case that has shocked the community, a mother from Sinsheim, Baden-Württemberg, has been sentenced to seven and a half years in prison after it was determined that she caused the death of her seven-month-old son, Daniel. The court found that the mother, Viktoria T., 33, administered a lethal dose of L-Polamidon, a substitute drug five times more potent than morphine, to her infant, leading to the child's death from cardiac arrest.

The incident occurred on July 2, 2024, when Daniel was suffering from hiccups and crying. In an attempt to soothe him, the mother chose to give him the drug, which she had been using as a substitute for methadone due to her long-standing addiction issues stemming from severe back pain. The baby passed away the following day.

Judge Jochen Herkle, who presided over the case, expressed his horror at the circumstances surrounding the child's death. He highlighted that cases involving children are particularly distressing for the court. The judge noted that while the mother had shown some affection for her child, she had previously administered drugs to Daniel on multiple occasions to alleviate his discomfort. On the day of the incident, she was aware that giving the overdose could result in death but acted out of fear of losing custody.

Throughout the trial, Viktoria T. maintained her innocence, claiming she had not given her child any drugs. In a tearful statement, she acknowledged her failures as a mother, stating she should have been more vigilant. The prosecution had sought a sentence of eight years, while the defense argued for her acquittal and is considering an appeal.

The case raises serious concerns about the impact of drug addiction on parenting and the tragic consequences it can have on children. The community is left to grapple with the loss of a young life and the implications of this verdict.
