Microsoft Introduces Windows Backup for Organizations to Streamline Migration

Wed 28th May, 2025

Microsoft has announced the launch of a limited public preview for its new feature, Windows Backup for Organizations. This tool is designed to simplify the migration process for users transitioning from Windows 10 to Windows 11.

The introduction of this backup solution is particularly timely, as support for Windows 10 is set to end on October 14 of this year. In a recent blog post aimed at the tech community, Microsoft emphasized that this feature aims to ease the migration burden for IT administrators. It provides a way to securely back up settings from Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices, allowing for easy restoration on systems utilizing Microsoft Entra.

According to Microsoft, the Windows Backup for Organizations feature will help reduce the amount of troubleshooting support required, as devices can be quickly reset and restored to their previous settings. The seamless transition from Windows 10 to Windows 11, aided by these stored backups, is expected to minimize downtime and enhance overall user productivity. Users will find their preferred settings readily available on restored systems, allowing for a smoother adjustment period.

However, not all devices will qualify for this limited public preview. To utilize the backup functionalities, devices must be either Microsoft Entra joined or Microsoft Entra hybrid joined, and they need to run a currently supported version of Windows 10 or 11. For full feature access, Windows 11 version 22H2 or newer is required, along with Microsoft Entra joined devices, an active Microsoft Intune test tenant, and Microsoft Intune Service Administrator rights. Interested parties must also participate in the Microsoft Management Customer Connection Program (CCP) to apply for the test.

For those looking to test the Windows Backup for Organizations feature, an application form must be completed. Microsoft is committed to further developing this functionality, making feedback from testers crucial to its evolution.

In a related development, Microsoft recently enhanced the Insider Beta preview version of Windows 11 with a migration assistant based on the Windows Backup application. This new feature will allow users to transfer their files and settings from an old PC to a new one during the setup process. Additional details regarding this function are expected to be released soon.
