Wed 7th May, 2025

Microsoft has announced significant updates for Windows 11, introducing a redesigned Start Menu and a variety of new artificial intelligence (AI) functions aimed at enhancing user experience. This latest update is positioned as part of the 'next wave of Windows experiences' and focuses on improving interaction particularly for devices equipped with Copilot Plus.

The revised Start Menu is designed to be more personal and customizable, offering users greater options for organizing and managing applications. The update, initially available for Windows Insider users, includes a new category view that organizes apps based on usage frequency. Additionally, a new mobile application will facilitate connectivity between Windows and smartphones, enabling direct access to both Android and iOS devices from the Start Menu, although this feature will be rolled out in Europe at a later date.

Among the standout features is the introduction of AI Actions in the File Explorer, allowing users to perform tasks such as content summarization and image editing directly through right-click options. These enhancements leverage AI capabilities from Microsoft 365 applications, streamlining workflows without the need to switch between different tools.

Furthermore, AI integration extends to Windows settings, where a new AI agent allows users to access settings using natural language queries. For instance, users can simply type phrases like 'my screen is too dim' or 'my mouse pointer is too small,' and the system will guide them to the appropriate settings without extensive searching.

This feature will first be available on Copilot Plus PCs powered by Snapdragon chips, with plans to expand compatibility to AMD and Intel devices in the future. Initially, the natural language input will support English only.

Additional updates include enhanced capabilities for Notepad, aimed at simplifying content creation and formatting. The Copilot feature will also introduce a 'Vision' function, enabling users to analyze screen content and reference it directly, an innovation previously announced for the Edge browser.

Windows Insiders will also have the opportunity to test the 'Press to Talk' feature, which activates voice control with a long press of the Copilot button. In the future, users will be able to summon Copilot with the phrase 'Hey, Copilot!' This function will be optional and requires user activation.

Moreover, Microsoft is expanding AI functionalities in various system tools. For example, the Photos app will gain new lighting adjustments, while Paint will enable users to edit images using object selection and AI-generated text prompts. A new sticker generator will also allow users to create custom designs through text prompts.

Finally, the Snipping Tool will incorporate AI features that automatically adjust selected areas for optimal screenshots, eliminating the need for manual cropping.
