Microsoft Initiates Spring Cleaning for Windows Update Drivers

Mon 23rd Jun, 2025

Microsoft has announced a significant initiative aimed at enhancing the efficiency of Windows Update by removing outdated drivers. This undertaking is particularly directed at hardware manufacturers, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a streamlined driver ecosystem.

In a recent blog post on its Tech Community platform, Microsoft explained the rationale behind this move, stating that it seeks to minimize security and compatibility risks associated with outdated software. The company aims to provide users with a robust selection of drivers that support a wide array of hardware devices while ensuring that Windows' security is not compromised.

The initial phase of this driver clean-up will focus on those drivers for which newer versions are already available on Windows Update. The process entails the removal of outdated drivers from the system, preventing them from being offered to users. Specifically, drivers will be marked as expired, which means they will no longer be linked to any target audience within the Windows ecosystem.

Technical details of this process indicate that expired drivers will have all associated target groups removed, effectively making them inaccessible via Windows Update. However, hardware partners are permitted to reintroduce drivers that have been removed, although Microsoft may require a business justification for their reinstatement.

Following the initial round of driver removals, Microsoft plans to publish a follow-up blog post that identifies the drivers that are being phased out. Hardware manufacturers will have a six-month window to raise any concerns regarding the removal of their drivers. If no action is taken during this period, Microsoft will proceed to permanently withdraw these drivers from Windows Update.

In addition to the first round of clean-up focused on recently updated drivers, Microsoft intends to conduct regular maintenance on other categories of drivers in the future, although specific details about these additional categories have yet to be disclosed.

The topic of drivers has garnered increased attention from Microsoft developers recently. Earlier this year, the company postponed a planned change to the Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), allowing the continued distribution of new drivers through this update service. The timeline for when support for Driver Update Synchronization in WSUS will conclude remains uncertain.
