Microsoft Launches Windows 365 Reserve: Emergency Cloud PCs

Thu 14th Aug, 2025

Microsoft has introduced Windows 365 Reserve, a new service providing virtual cloud PCs to users during client outages. This offering allows users to access virtual machines (VMs) when their primary Windows 11 device is unavailable. However, these VMs are not intended to serve as permanent replacements; they can be utilized for a maximum of ten days, giving users enough time to regain access to their physical laptops or desktops.

As users approach the end of their VM access period, notifications will be sent starting three days before expiration. Additionally, users have the option to return their emergency VM with just a few clicks prior to this notification period.

Windows 365 Reserve operates similarly to the standard Windows 365 service but is offered as a distinct product. Administrators can configure the service through Microsoft Intune, ensuring that the VMs are readily available as needed during emergencies. The settings and applications are determined by the clients themselves rather than Microsoft, offering greater customization. Furthermore, users can utilize familiar cloud management features, including the geographic location of the cloud PCs, operating system images, and user group access through Entra ID.

However, a notable limitation exists: users must have a secondary system to access these cloud PCs, which can be done through a web application or the Windows app. Microsoft states that any client device will suffice for this access. It remains unclear whether this means personal devices can be used or if companies should provide additional emergency PCs for such scenarios. In the latter case, pre-configured Windows systems could serve as more straightforward alternatives.

Currently, Windows 365 Reserve is in a closed beta phase. Companies interested in the service must apply and provide feedback to Microsoft regarding their experience. The timeline for when the service will be made widely available has not yet been disclosed. For more details on managing these cloud PCs, further information can be found in Microsoft's official announcement.
