Microsoft 365 Provides Limited Support Post Windows 10 End of Life

Mon 12th May, 2025

As Microsoft prepares for the end of official support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, the company has clarified the future of its Microsoft 365 applications on this operating system. While these applications will continue to function after the support deadline, users can expect limited support and performance issues.

In an official support article, Microsoft outlined that applications such as Word will remain operational after Windows 10 reaches its end of support. However, users may experience decreased performance and reliability when using Microsoft 365 applications on an unsupported operating system. Therefore, organizations are strongly advised to transition to Windows 11 to ensure optimal performance.

To assist with this transition, Microsoft has announced that it will provide security updates for Microsoft 365 applications used on Windows 10 for three years following the end of support, which is set for October 10, 2028. These updates will be delivered through standard update channels, ensuring a layer of protection for users during this transition period.

It is important to note that while users with a valid Microsoft 365 subscription can still open support cases, the support will be limited for issues arising specifically with Microsoft 365 applications on Windows 10. If a problem occurs exclusively on Windows 10, regardless of whether it is the standard version or one with Extended Security Updates (ESU), support will prompt users to upgrade to Windows 11.

If users are unable to upgrade to Windows 11, the support provided will be restricted to troubleshooting assistance only, with some technical measures potentially unavailable. Cases concerning Microsoft 365 applications running on Windows 10 will not include options to report bugs or request additional product updates. The final support phase will coincide with the conclusion of the ESU program for Windows 10.

Such limitations are consistent with Microsoft's approach towards the end of product life cycles. For instance, when support for Windows 8.1 ended, Microsoft similarly ceased support for Microsoft Office 2019 and newer versions on that operating system, provided the issues were related to the outdated platform.

Organizations and individual users are encouraged to prioritize their operating system upgrades to maintain security and performance standards, as reliance on outdated software can pose significant risks in today's rapidly evolving technological landscape.
