A 29-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of his ex-partner, a 27-year-old woman, in Berlin. The victim was fatally stabbed 85 times in a violent incident that occurred in an elevator, following the couple's separation.
The Berlin regional court found the defendant guilty of murder, stating that he acted out of deep emotional turmoil, fueled by jealousy and a sense of ownership. The court's presiding judge, Wolfgang Dobrikat, emphasized that the assailant sought to 'destroy' the victim upon realizing their relationship was irreparably over.
On January 25, 2025, the defendant confronted his ex-partner outside her apartment, where she had been living with their four-year-old son. Having ended their relationship in November 2024, the victim was unaware that her former partner would attack her. The child was reportedly staying with relatives at the time of the incident.
During the proceedings, it was revealed that the couple had a heated argument before the stabbing. Neighbors heard the commotion and became concerned, yet the assailant reassured them that everything was fine. The victim, unaware of the impending danger, entered the elevator where she was attacked.
The court described the attack as premeditated, with the defendant beginning the assault by stabbing the victim in the back and neck before inflicting wounds to her face, which the judge noted reflected the assailant's evident hatred.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but the victim succumbed to her injuries on-site. The court ruled that the crime was committed with a degree of treachery, motivated by lowly motives. However, it did not recognize a particular severity of guilt, as the murder was deemed not to have been pre-planned.
The defense argued for a lesser charge of manslaughter, claiming that the attack was an emotional reaction driven by fear and concern for his child. The lawyer indicated that the defendant sought to discuss custody matters with the victim, although no formal proposal was made in court.
This tragic case highlights the alarming issue of gender-based violence, with a significant rise in femicides reported in recent years in Berlin. According to statistics, 33 women were murdered by family members in the last four years, underscoring the urgent need for societal change regarding domestic violence.
The judgment, which reflects the broader issue of violence against women, is not yet final, as the defendant retains the right to appeal the decision.
