Members of Left-Wing Group Charged with Attempted Murder in Budapest Assault

Düsseldorf - Six individuals, aged between 21 and 27, have been charged by the Federal Prosecutor's Office in Germany for their involvement in violent attacks against political opponents during an international neo-Nazi gathering in Budapest, Hungary, in February 2023. These individuals, linked to a left-wing extremist group known as the 'Hammerbande', face serious allegations, including membership in a criminal organization, aggravated bodily harm, and attempted murder.

The group allegedly traveled to Budapest armed with hammers, batons, and pepper spray, intent on assaulting attendees of the 'Day of Honor' event, which is known for attracting far-right extremists. Surveillance footage captured the brutal attacks, revealing the extent of the violence inflicted on the victims, who reportedly suffered from bruises, contusions, and even broken bones.

Prior to their charges, the suspects sought refuge in various German cities such as Cologne, Kiel, Bremen, and Hamm, in an attempt to evade arrest and avoid extradition to Hungary, where European and German arrest warrants had been issued against them.

The trial is set to take place at the Higher Regional Court in Düsseldorf, where the State Protection Senate will determine the course of proceedings against these accused members. Among the group is Maja T., a non-binary individual, who was arrested in Berlin in December 2023 and subsequently extradited to Hungary in June 2024. Maja T. has since engaged in a hunger strike due to unfavorable detention conditions and was recently transferred to a hospital for treatment.

The 'Hammerbande', also referred to as 'Antifa-Ost', includes Lina E., who has already been convicted of related charges. In May, the Federal Prosecutor's Office also filed charges against Johann G., who is believed to have held a prominent role within the group and participated in the Budapest assaults.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the focus remains on how the judiciary will address the actions of the 'Hammerbande' and the implications of politically motivated violence in contemporary society.
