Lausitz Festival Kicks Off with 'Sonettfabrik' in Domsdorf

Sat 23rd Aug, 2025

The Lausitz Festival is set to begin this Sunday, showcasing a diverse array of artistic performances across various mediums including music, dance, and theater. The event, which runs from August 24 to September 14, is expected to attract around 10,000 visitors, according to festival organizers.

This year's festival spans 13 locations and encompasses 23 unique venues, ranging from historic industrial sites to churches and even a decommissioned coal mine. Despite a significant reduction in the program budget--down by 40% compared to previous years--the festival aims to deliver a rich cultural experience. As a result, the number of events has been halved compared to last year, but organizers are optimistic about audience engagement.

So far, over 2,000 tickets have been sold, with 15 out of the 34 scheduled performances already sold out. While ticket prices have increased by approximately 10% compared to the previous year, organizers have structured pricing to ensure accessibility for as many attendees as possible.

The festival will commence with the premiere of 'Sonettfabrik' at the historic Brikettfabrik in Domsdorf, a site recognized as a technical monument. This production draws inspiration from Shakespeare's sonnets and is described by festival director Daniel Kühnel as a bold undertaking. He emphasizes the unique blend of Shakespeare's intricate poetry with the industrial backdrop of a late 19th-century brick factory, aiming to create a captivating theatrical experience.

In addition to 'Sonettfabrik', the festival will present a revival of 'Othello/Die Fremden' in the former glass factory in Weißwasser. This production, directed by Marcel Kohler, continues to build on last year's successful rendition. In Görlitz, composer Marius Felix Lange will bring a new musical interpretation to the Sorbian legend of 'Krabat' through a family opera.

A highlight of the festival will be a concert celebrating the 90th birthday of renowned Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, featuring live performances of his works that will be broadcast across Europe. Additionally, a song evening in Bautzen will commemorate the 125th anniversary of Kurt Weill's birth, featuring renowned artist Ute Lemper.

This marks the sixth edition of the Lausitz Festival, which this year will revolve around the theme 'unconsciously', aiming to highlight the concepts of community and togetherness. The festival continues to be a platform for global artists while fostering local cultural engagement.
