New Director Aims to Revitalize Kunsthaus Minsk as Cultural Hub

Sun 18th May, 2025

The Kunsthaus Minsk, located in the heart of Potsdam, is seeking to enhance its presence within the local community as it faces challenges in attracting visitors. The newly appointed director, Anna Schneider, has unveiled her vision for the museum, emphasizing the importance of making it an integral part of urban life.

Schneider expressed her commitment to establishing the Kunsthaus as a vibrant locale for diverse and interdisciplinary programming. Her aim is to amplify underrepresented voices in the art world, creating a dynamic environment where art, architecture, history, and contemporary issues converge.

Since taking on the role in April, Schneider has recognized the museum's struggle with declining visitor numbers, which recently led to the closure of its affiliated café. This situation has prompted her to devise strategies to engage the public more effectively.

The structure that houses the Kunsthaus was built in the 1970s and served as a popular restaurant during the East German era. After the reunification, it continued to operate as a dining establishment for several years, but eventually fell into disrepair.

In 2019, the building was acquired by the foundation of Hasso Plattner, a prominent art patron and software billionaire, with the intention of renovating it and reopening it as an art venue. Since its relaunch in 2022, the museum has primarily showcased works from East German artists, along with contemporary art, as part of Plattner's extensive art collection.

Schneider's plan involves not only increasing foot traffic to the museum but also fostering a sense of community through artistic collaboration and dialogue. By positioning the Kunsthaus Minsk as a space for exchanges between artists and the public, she hopes to reinvigorate its role in the cultural landscape of Potsdam.

As she embarks on this mission, Schneider is determined to transform the Kunsthaus into a lively center that resonates with a broad audience, thereby solidifying its place in the city's vibrant cultural scene.
