Joschka Fischer Raises Alarm Over Russian Threats to NATO

Mon 7th Apr, 2025

Former German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer has expressed serious concerns about the increasing threats posed by Russia, emphasizing that the European Union must enhance its defense capabilities. In a recent discussion on ARD's 'Caren Miosga' program, Fischer stated that the only viable solution to counter these external threats, particularly given the potential withdrawal of US support, would be the establishment of a unified European military force.

Fischer warned that if Russian President Vladimir Putin were to succeed in Ukraine, he would likely extend his ambitions further west, raising the specter of a direct military confrontation with NATO forces. He asserted that such an action would be a significant challenge for the alliance, potentially leading to its dissolution. He remarked, 'If Putin tests NATO's resolve, it could signify the end of the alliance.'

In light of these developments, Fischer advocated for a return to military conscription in Germany, highlighting the need for a strong and prepared military to address contemporary threats. He acknowledged the irony of his position, given his historical opposition to military service, stating he never anticipated advocating for compulsory military service and armament.

Fischer recounted his own experience with military service in the 1960s when he was deemed unfit for service due to vision problems. He explained that he had always intended to refuse military service, but noted that the current geopolitical climate necessitates a reevaluation of Germany's defense policies.

Furthermore, Fischer commented on the strained relationship between the United States and the European Union, particularly under the current US administration, which he believes is undermining the democratic structures he values. Despite the adversarial rhetoric from Washington toward Europe, he expressed a level of indifference, suggesting that it is crucial for European nations to focus on collective security rather than being distracted by American politics.

He concluded by noting the challenges that future German leaders, such as CDU's Friedrich Merz, will face in navigating relations with the US, advising them to maintain a balance between firmness and diplomacy.
