Istanbul's Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu Placed in Pre-Trial Detention

Sun 23rd Mar, 2025

Ekrem Imamoglu, the Mayor of Istanbul, has been ordered into pre-trial detention by a Turkish court following a request from the state prosecutor's office. This decision has been widely reported by various Turkish media outlets, including the private news channel A Haber and the state-run Anadolu Agency. Imamoglu faces multiple allegations, including charges of corruption and terrorism, both of which he has denied.

According to a statement from Imamoglu's legal representative, the Caglayan Court in Istanbul initiated the detention primarily due to potential corruption offenses. The court will address these charges along with the terrorism allegations in two separate legal proceedings that involve a total of 106 individuals. Pre-trial detention has also been imposed on Imamoglu's advisors and others linked to the case.

Imamoglu, a prominent opposition figure and a rival of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was apprehended just days prior to his expected nomination as the presidential candidate for the main opposition party, the Republican People's Party (CHP). He is considered a leading contender for the upcoming presidential elections in Turkey. Despite the legal actions against their candidate, the CHP has expressed its commitment to support Imamoglu in the electoral race.

The terrorism allegations stem from a collaboration between the CHP and the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) during municipal elections. The Turkish Attorney General's office claims that this partnership was an attempt by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) to expand its influence.

In response to Imamoglu's arrest, significant protests have erupted across Turkey, with estimates suggesting that up to 300,000 demonstrators took to the streets despite a ban on gatherings. The CHP reported that many individuals participated in these protests, which led to confrontations with police forces that utilized pepper spray and rubber bullets. More than 300 people were reportedly detained during these demonstrations.

Opposition leaders and observers have accused Erdogan's government of attempting to eliminate a political adversary through these actions. CHP leader Özgür Özel described Imamoglu's arrest as akin to a 'civil coup,' while the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) dismissed these claims as the 'pinnacle of political irrationality.'
