ISTAF Berlin Faces Ticket Sales Challenges Ahead of Annual Athletics Event

Fri 25th Jul, 2025

The prestigious ISTAF (Internationales Stadionfest) in Berlin, a highlight for athletics enthusiasts, is experiencing a downturn in ticket sales this year. The event, traditionally known for drawing large crowds, is set to take place this Sunday at 1:00 PM, but organizers are reporting that they have not met their ticket sales targets.

This year's unusually early schedule appears to be a significant factor contributing to the lower interest. The ISTAF has been moved to late July to accommodate the World Championships, which will be held from September 13 to 21 in Tokyo. As a result, the event is clashing with the beginning of summer vacations in Germany, which may further impact attendance.

Despite the challenges, the organizers anticipate around 30,000 spectators will attend the event, which will be broadcast on ZDF starting at 3:45 PM. The ISTAF is not only a platform for elite athletes but also a celebration of the sport, featuring top competitors who are expected to draw spectators.

Among the stars set to compete are Olympic champion in shot put, Yemisi Ogunleye, long jump champion Malaika Mihambo, sprint sensation Gina Lückenkemper, and world-leading javelin thrower Julian Weber. Weber, who recently achieved a personal best of 91.06 meters in Doha, expressed his confidence ahead of the competition, noting that he had achieved this milestone while wearing borrowed shoes from a fellow athlete due to a mix-up.

In addition to the athletic talent on display, the event also has the support of local dignitaries, including Berlin's Mayor Kai Wegner, who is expected to make an appearance. He will arrive from his holiday specifically to discuss the potential for a Berlin Olympic bid.

In previous years, the ISTAF has benefitted from heightened interest due to major international competitions, such as the Olympics, which can significantly boost ticket sales. Last year, the event was particularly successful as it coincided with the Olympics in Paris, where German athletes garnered multiple medals.

As the event approaches, organizers are hopeful that the participation of renowned athletes will help stimulate interest and encourage last-minute ticket purchases. While the current challenges are evident, there is optimism that the ISTAF will still be a significant occasion in Berlin's sports calendar this summer.
