Israeli Government Dismisses Head of Internal Security Service

Fri 21st Mar, 2025

The Israeli government has officially confirmed the controversial dismissal of the chief of the Shin Bet internal security service. This decision, made by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, marks a historic moment, as it is the first time in Israel's history that a sitting government has removed the head of Shin Bet.

The cabinet unanimously approved Netanyahu's decision late at night, following significant public backlash and mass protests in Jerusalem against the planned termination of Ronen Bar. The protests erupted after Netanyahu announced the dismissal, which many viewed as politically motivated.

Netanyahu cited a 'lack of trust' in Bar as the primary reason for his removal. Their relationship had reportedly soured over time, particularly in the wake of a critical investigation into the failures that allowed the Hamas massacre on October 7, 2023. This incident has been a focal point of scrutiny for the Israeli leadership and has raised questions about accountability.

Additionally, Shin Bet is currently investigating alleged illicit ties involving Netanyahu's associates and Qatar, a nation that plays a role as a mediator in indirect talks with Hamas while also being seen as a supporter of the group. Critics argue that Netanyahu's decision to dismiss Bar may pave the way for the appointment of a new Shin Bet chief who could be more aligned with his interests and potentially hinder the ongoing investigations.

Bar is expected to vacate his position by April 10, unless a successor is appointed before that date. The public response to his dismissal has been overwhelmingly negative, with thousands taking to the streets of Jerusalem to protest the government's decision, including demonstrations occurring on the night the decision was announced.
