The Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is reportedly taking extensive precautions amid fears of assassination attempts by Israel or the United States. According to a recent report, Khamenei is believed to be operating from an underground bunker where he has been coordinating potential successors in case of his demise.
Sources familiar with Khamenei's plans have indicated that the 86-year-old leader has ceased all electronic communications to minimize the risk of detection. Instead, he is relying on a limited number of trusted intermediaries for his communications.
In light of escalating Israeli military actions against Iran, which are characterized as the most severe since the Iran-Iraq War of the 1980s, Khamenei has reportedly prepared for an orderly transition of power. He has submitted three candidates for succession to the powerful Assembly of Experts, a body responsible for selecting the Supreme Leader according to Iranian law. While the identities of these candidates remain undisclosed, Khamenei has urged the Assembly to act swiftly in the event of his death to ensure a smooth leadership transition.
The issue of Khamenei's succession is particularly sensitive, as the Supreme Leader holds significant authority over Iran's military, legislative, and judicial branches, as well as being the highest religious authority in Shia Islam. A vacancy in this position could have profound political and religious implications for the country.
Additional Iranian sources have described the current situation as critical, noting that numerous high-ranking military officials have been killed in targeted attacks attributed to Israel. The Iranian leadership has openly acknowledged failures within its security and intelligence apparatus, which has heightened concerns of possible American involvement in the ongoing conflict.
The Iranian authorities are reportedly bracing for extensive attacks on vital infrastructure, including oil refineries and dams, should the United States enter the fray. There are also fears of increased infiltration by foreign agents, potentially reaching the highest levels of government.
In response to these threats, Iran's intelligence ministry has implemented stringent security measures, mandating that senior officials remain underground and refrain from using electronic communications. Internet access has been severely restricted, and overseas phone calls have become virtually impossible.
