Investigation Closed: Prosecutor Deems 34 Police Shots Fired at Driver in NRW Justified

Sun 4th May, 2025

In a significant development, the public prosecutor's office in Detmold has concluded its investigation into the incident involving 34 police shots fired at a 19-year-old driver in Bad Salzuflen, North Rhine-Westphalia. The prosecutor determined that the use of force by the officers was justified under self-defense circumstances.

The event dates back nearly two years when the young driver was pursued by multiple police units. The chase escalated when the vehicle approached a dead end, prompting the officers to exit their vehicles. As the driver reversed and accelerated towards them, six officers discharged their firearms. The young man from Herford was struck five times and has since been left paralyzed.

According to the prosecutor's office, the officers believed they were facing an imminent threat to their lives due to the driver's high-speed approach in a confined area. This perception of danger was cited as the reason for the justified use of their weapons. In a related matter, investigations into the driver's actions have led to charges of attempted murder, as he was reportedly driving without a valid license. Authorities allege that he intended to avoid detection by fleeing aggressively.

The incident initially came to light on June 3, 2023, when a police patrol noticed a vehicle operating without its headlights. The driver attempted to evade capture, reaching speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour in a populated area and 200 kilometers per hour on a rural road. In response, the police dispatched additional units to assist in the pursuit.

This case raises important questions regarding police response protocols and the use of firearms in high-pressure situations. It reflects ongoing discussions about the balance between ensuring public safety and the measures taken by law enforcement in critical scenarios.

As the investigation concludes, the prosecutor's findings will likely influence future protocols and training for police officers in similar situations, as well as public perception of police operations in high-stakes encounters.
