Instagram Introduces New Location Sharing Feature

Thu 7th Aug, 2025

Instagram has unveiled a set of new functionalities, including a location sharing feature that updates automatically upon app access. Initially, these features will be rolled out in the United States, with timelines for availability in Germany yet to be announced.

The location sharing option is turned off by default and can be activated by users. Unlike other platforms, Instagram will not offer live real-time tracking. Instead, the location sharing feature will refresh the last active location whenever the app is opened or revisited. This functionality is similar to features found in other applications, such as Snapchat's Snap Map, where users can share their real-time location with friends, an aspect that has raised privacy concerns.

Users can selectively share their location with friends, a specific group called 'Close Friends,' or choose individual contacts. Additionally, the ability to disable location sharing for certain places or people is included. Parents will have oversight of their teenagers' location sharing, receiving notifications when their children choose to share their location. The location map will also facilitate the discovery of content at notable places, such as Reels or Stories from friends at concerts or popular local venues.

In another enhancement, Instagram has introduced a 'Friends' tab in the Reels section, allowing users to view content that their friends have liked, created, reposted, or commented on. This feature aims to simplify the process of sharing favorite videos among users. Accessible via a dedicated section at the top of the Reels, it also allows individuals to hide their own activities or mute specific users, providing a tailored experience. This function is now being launched globally.

Moreover, the platform is enhancing the way users can share public Reels and posts. Users will have the option to attach notes to their shares, and all reposted content will be organized into a separate tab on their profile, making it easier to manage shared favorite content. However, the timing for the release of this feature in Germany remains unclear.
