Mass demonstrations have surged across Indonesia after the tragic death of a 21-year-old motorcycle taxi driver, who was struck by an armored police vehicle in Jakarta. The incident occurred amid ongoing protests near the parliament, where students and citizens were voicing their grievances regarding various political issues.
The deceased, identified as Affan Kurniawan, lost his life during a chaotic confrontation between protesters and law enforcement on Thursday evening. The protests were primarily focused on the recent decision to increase the monthly housing allowance for parliamentarians to 50 million rupiah (approximately $3,000), a figure that starkly contrasts with the financial struggles faced by many Indonesians.
In the early hours of Friday, demonstrators marched toward the headquarters of the Mobile Brigade, the anti-riot police unit, expressing their anger over Kurniawan's death. The situation escalated as some protesters attempted to breach the police compound, prompting law enforcement to respond with tear gas. In retaliation, a group of protesters set fire to a police post and vehicles in the vicinity.
In light of the incident, Listyo Sigit Prabowo, the chief of Indonesia's national police, publicly expressed his remorse and extended condolences to Kurniawan's family and the ride-hailing community. He assured the public that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident would be conducted.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto also addressed the situation in a recorded message, urging calm and emphasizing the need for accountability among the officers involved. He expressed his shock at the excessive force used during the protests and called for a thorough and transparent inquiry.
The protests that have erupted in Jakarta and other cities are not solely a reaction to Kurniawan's death. They have been fueled by widespread dissatisfaction with the government's financial decisions, particularly the substantial salary increase for parliamentarians amidst rising living costs and mass layoffs affecting the populace. Video footage circulating on social media showing politicians living in luxury has further incited public outrage.
Authorities have responded to the unrest with significant force, deploying tear gas and water cannons against the crowds and making numerous arrests. The protests reflect a growing wave of discontent among Indonesians who feel marginalized by their leaders' decisions.
