Increased Security Demands Following Cyber Attack on Berlin Justice Minister

Wed 20th Aug, 2025

The recent cyber attack on Berlin's Justice Minister, Felor Badenberg (CDU), has sparked a call for enhanced protective measures. The attack targeted the Berlin state government, described by SPD's interior policy spokesperson, Sebastian Fiedler, as an assault on a constitutional body. Fiedler emphasized that discussions are ongoing regarding how to bolster security protocols.

According to the Berlin Senate Department of Justice, the attack was specifically aimed at a workstation computer within the senior management division. Sensitive personal data, including emails and the digital calendar of Badenberg, which contained her appointments and contacts since February 1, 2023, was reportedly compromised.

Initial assessments indicate that a single computer was affected by the breach, with data having leaked from that device. A spokesperson from the Senate confirmed that there have been no indications of additional harmful data traffic and that external IT systems remain unaffected. The Senate's operations are still fully functional.

Speculation has arisen regarding the possibility of Iranian hackers being behind the incident, particularly given Minister Badenberg's Iranian heritage. Fiedler noted the presence of various foreign actors that pose security threats, highlighting the Iranian Revolutionary Guard's reputation for cyber capabilities.

Peter Neumann, a security studies professor at King's College London, remarked that the Iranian diaspora has historically been a target for the Iranian intelligence services. He underscored that Iran is among the countries that engage in extensive espionage activities in Germany, alongside China and Russia. Neumann pointed out that last year alone, there were ten recorded attempts at attacks in Europe attributed to Iranian operatives, which targeted not only dissidents but also the Jewish community.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of addressing cybersecurity measures seriously, especially given the active role of foreign entities in cyber warfare.
