Holiday Season Expected to Create Traffic Congestion on Northeastern Highways

Fri 12th Dec, 2025

The upcoming holiday season is set to bring increased traffic volumes to major highways in northeastern Germany, with transportation authorities forecasting significant congestion as families travel for Christmas. The Autobahn GmbH has advised motorists in Berlin, Brandenburg, and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to prepare for heightened traffic, especially from Friday, December 19, as school holidays commence across several states.

While the number of vehicles during the festive period is typically lower than in peak travel seasons such as spring and summer, the synchronized start and end dates of school breaks across many federal states are expected to concentrate travel within a short timeframe. This situation is likely to result in heavy congestion, particularly at the start of the holiday period.

In Berlin, Brandenburg, and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the school holidays will begin on December 22. The highest volume of outbound travel is anticipated on the preceding Friday, as families begin their journeys after school hours and coincide with traditional evening commuter traffic. This overlap is expected to significantly increase the risk of traffic jams. The following Saturday is also projected to experience high traffic levels, as additional travelers set out for short-term holiday destinations.

According to data from previous years, traffic conditions on the highways are generally calmer during the Christmas holidays themselves. On Christmas Eve and the two Christmas holidays, major traffic jams are not expected. However, authorities indicate that traffic will likely intensify again on December 27, as many people use the days between Christmas and New Year to visit relatives and friends. The return wave of traffic is projected to begin in the new year as holidaymakers head back home.

To help drivers plan ahead, the Autobahn GmbH has published a risk map covering the period from December 15 to January 11. This map highlights areas where ongoing roadworks and increased travel activity may cause delays. Key routes expected to face disruptions include the A2, A10, A11, A19, and sections of the A20, which are important corridors in the region. Motorists are encouraged to consult the official Autobahn GmbH website at www.autobahn.de for the latest information and updates on traffic conditions and construction zones.

Authorities recommend that travelers prepare for possible delays by checking real-time traffic updates and considering alternative routes if necessary. Planning departures during off-peak hours may also help avoid the worst of the congestion. With careful preparation, motorists can help ensure a safer and less stressful holiday journey.
