Historic Potsdam Landtag Sold for Restoration After Vandalism

Fri 9th May, 2025

The site of the former Landtag in Potsdam, marred by a recent fire and ongoing vandalism, is set to undergo significant restoration following its acquisition by a real estate development firm. The KW-Development GmbH has announced its purchase of the property located on Brauhausberg, marking a new chapter for this historically significant structure.

According to the company, initial planning has already commenced regarding the future of the site. The managing director of KW-Development emphasized the importance of preserving the former Landtag, stating it is one of Potsdam's landmarks, and its current state of disrepair is not a viable long-term solution. In addition to restoring the protected landmark, the firm is also considering the construction of new buildings on the site, although detailed plans have yet to be disclosed.

The former Landtag served as the meeting place for the Brandenburg state parliament until 2013. During the GDR era, it housed the regional offices of the SED party, gaining the nickname 'Kreml' due to its prominent visibility. The building has been vacant for several years, and its condition has deteriorated significantly. A major fire broke out in August 2023, leading to the collapse of the roof structure, while vandalism has further damaged the already crumbling site.

Previously, in 2015, the State of Brandenburg sold the property to a different real estate developer, who had plans to convert the historical building into residential and commercial spaces. However, those intentions did not materialize, and the site continued to fall into neglect.

KW-Development GmbH specializes in urban development and the restoration of historical buildings. The firm has successfully completed various construction projects in Potsdam, indicating a commitment to revitalizing the area while preserving its historical significance.
