Hiker Rescued After Google Maps Directs Him to Dangerous Climbing Route

In a recent incident in Marktschellenberg, Bavaria, a 40-year-old man found himself in a precarious situation after relying on Google Maps for navigation instead of following marked hiking paths.

The individual intended to take a leisurely hike to the Stöhrhaus, located on the Berchtesgadener Hochthron, which stands at 1,972 meters. However, instead of guiding him to his destination, the app directed him straight to the beginning of the Hochthron climbing route, a challenging path designed for experienced climbers.

Compounding the issue, the hiker was unprepared for such a strenuous trek, lacking both climbing experience and the necessary equipment. As conditions worsened and he became increasingly overwhelmed, he reached out for assistance from the Stöhrhaus, a mountain hut managed by the German Alpine Club.

Recognizing the severity of the situation, the hut's manager promptly initiated a rescue operation. They contacted emergency services, and the Bergwacht Marktschellenberg, a mountain rescue team, was dispatched. After a detailed conversation with the rescue coordinator, who noted the man's disorientation, a team of three rescuers arrived using an all-terrain vehicle and proceeded on foot to locate the hiker.

In the darkness, the rescuers successfully found him and utilized a safety rope to guide him away from the hazardous area. Additional support arrived shortly after from five more rescue personnel. Despite the challenging circumstances, the operation was executed successfully, ensuring the hiker's safe return.

In a curious turn of events, once the man was safely out of danger, he chose to light a joint to relax before being escorted by the rescuers to their vehicle. He was then transported to the local police station and subsequently taken to the Berchtesgaden train station.

The Bergwacht has issued a critical reminder regarding navigation in mountainous regions, emphasizing the necessity of combining technology with common sense. They urge hikers to check the weather, plan their routes carefully, and to utilize reliable hiking applications equipped with topographical maps, as standard navigation tools may not suffice in alpine environments.
