Hertha BSC Secures License for 2. Bundesliga Amid Financial Recovery

Wed 4th Jun, 2025

Hertha BSC has officially received the necessary license from the Deutsche Fußball Liga (DFL) to compete in the upcoming season of the 2. Bundesliga, alleviating any lingering uncertainties regarding the club's financial eligibility. Despite this positive development, the club's journey towards economic stability is still ongoing.

Following extensive discussions with the DFL, the club's management confirmed compliance with the financial requirements, allowing them to enter the new season with confidence. The financial officer of Hertha BSC remarked on the progress made, stating that many aspects have been aligned correctly, but there remains a path to follow for complete recovery.

Hertha BSC, a club with a rich history, has faced significant financial challenges in recent years, with high liabilities continuing to weigh heavily on its operations. According to the DFL's economic report for the 2023/24 season, the club is currently dealing with a negative equity of approximately EUR23.062 million alongside total liabilities amounting to EUR56.75 million.

A key factor in securing the license was the recent handling of a Nordic Bond loan worth EUR40 million. On Tuesday, the club secured approval from investors to extend the loan's maturity by three years, pushing it back to 2028 and reducing the interest rate from 10.5% to 6.5%. This development is crucial as it provides the club with additional financial flexibility that it desperately needs.

If the club had not reached this agreement, it would have been obligated to repay the loan by November. Now, executives at Hertha BSC have two options: either refinance and pay out the bond or extend it further, which would give them much-needed breathing room in their finances. The priority remains to eliminate the bond, as emphasized by the club's management during a recent members' meeting.

Despite facing financial scrutiny, preparations for the upcoming season in the second division have already begun. The club has secured contracts for two key players, Fabian Reese and Michael Cuisance, extending their commitments until 2030 and 2029, respectively. The head coach and club leadership have set a clear objective for the next season: to return to the Bundesliga.

The team's preparations are set to commence on June 23, marking a new chapter as they aim to overcome past hurdles and strive for success in the coming league campaign.
