Hannover Messe: Study Reveals Improved Cybersecurity in Machinery Sector

Tue 1st Apr, 2025

The landscape of cybersecurity is evolving, particularly for the German machinery and equipment manufacturing sector. A recent study presented by the VDMA (German Engineering Federation) at the Hannover Messe highlights a significant enhancement in the industry's defenses against cyberattacks.

Despite a notable increase in the frequency of cyber incidents, manufacturers are demonstrating improved resilience. According to the findings, only 55% of surveyed companies reported adverse effects from security incidents, a marked decrease from nearly 70% in 2019. This progress can be attributed to the implementation of more robust security measures across the industry.

While the number of cyberattacks has surged compared to previous years, the ability of companies to thwart these attacks has also improved. The study indicates that the annual damages caused by cyber incidents still amount to hundreds of billions of euros, underscoring the ongoing threat posed by cybercriminals.

Among the companies affected by security breaches, significant impacts included capital losses (32%) and production disruptions (29%). Fortunately, there have been no reports of incidents posing a critical risk to human safety or the environment in the past two years. Moreover, only 3% of respondents noted a substantial loss of intellectual property due to hacking, a significant decline from the 9% reported in 2019.

Despite the positive trends, experts stress that there is still considerable work to be done, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Maximilian Moser, an expert on software and digitalization at VDMA, noted that while the progress is commendable, it does not warrant complacency. He emphasized the need for targeted support for smaller businesses, which often lack the resources to implement comprehensive cybersecurity strategies.

Currently, 73% of large enterprises with over 1,000 employees have dedicated personnel for internet security. However, the overall percentage of companies with such roles stands at only 58%. This disparity highlights the ongoing challenge of equipping all segments of the industry with adequate cybersecurity resources.

The findings of this study are critical as the industry continues to face evolving cyber threats. The emphasis on enhancing cybersecurity measures is essential not only for safeguarding company assets but also for maintaining trust within the sector and ensuring the continuity of operations.
