Germersheim, Rhineland-Palatinate - The decline of the Germersheim-based furniture manufacturer Nolte has culminated in its final closure, resulting in the loss of 230 jobs. The company, known for its production of bedroom furniture and storage systems, filed for insolvency in November 2023. Despite efforts to find a potential investor, no viable solutions were identified, leading to the decision to shut down operations by July 2025.
Founded in 1955, Nolte Furniture once stood as a significant player in the European furniture market, serving as the second-largest employer in the Germersheim district with a workforce that peaked at around 1,000 employees. However, following the insolvency announcement, the company faced a series of layoffs, ultimately reducing its workforce to about 230 employees, of whom 80 have already received their termination notices.
According to Steffen Rauschenbusch, the insolvency administrator from the Mannheim law firm Ernestus, the remaining staff will remain employed until the end of July to fulfill existing and new orders. The firm had previously exhibited signs of potential recovery at the start of the year, but the situation deteriorated rapidly. Rauschenbusch noted a stark decline in business performance, stating that the company's revenue, which had consistently hovered around 100 million euros over the years, plummeted to approximately 65 million euros in 2023.
The sudden collapse of Nolte Furniture has been attributed to several factors, including geopolitical instability, ongoing tariff debates, and the overall challenges facing the furniture industry. These issues, exacerbated by the broader economic landscape, proved insurmountable for the company.
The fate of the Nolte manufacturing site in Germersheim remains uncertain following the closure announcement. The Nolte Group, the parent company, clarified that the insolvency solely impacts the Germersheim facility, which specializes in bedroom furniture production. The situation stands in stark contrast to other businesses in the region; for instance, the fashion retailer Sinn successfully navigated its financial troubles, preserving 34 locations and 1,500 jobs.
Employees were informed on Monday that the company could not be salvaged, leading to the gradual ramp-down of production starting May 1.
