Significant Train Disruptions and Detours at Cologne Central Station

Thu 1st May, 2025

Cologne Central Station is set to become a challenging hub for commuters and travelers in the coming weeks due to extensive disruptions to train services. This is a result of the upcoming activation of a new electronic signaling system, which necessitates a major service interruption from Friday evening at 9:00 PM until 5:00 AM on Monday, May 19. During this period, nearly all train services will be rerouted or replaced by bus services, primarily affecting regional transport.

Specifically, the ICE express trains operating between Bonn and Berlin will not be running. According to the Deutsche Bahn, this situation represents one of the largest service interruptions in the greater Cologne area.

Furthermore, train operations on the left bank of the Rhine between Cologne and Koblenz will be entirely halted. However, services on the opposite bank of the Rhine will remain operational. The total duration of the disruption is expected to last for approximately two and a half weeks, impacting the daily routines of the 180,000 passengers who frequent the busiest train station in North Rhine-Westphalia.

In addition, ICE trains traveling to and from Aachen will not operate between Aachen and Cologne. Trains running to and from Brussels will be diverted via Krefeld, resulting in extended travel times of up to 75 minutes, as reported by Deutsche Bahn. For local and regional passengers, train services will be replaced by a comprehensive bus replacement service. Over 100 buses are set to be deployed, with an estimated travel distance of around 700,000 kilometers during this period.

While these changes aim to enhance the efficiency and reliability of train services in the future, the immediate impact will undoubtedly be felt by those relying on the Cologne Central Station for their daily commutes.
