Germany Reenters Aircraft Manufacturing: New Eco-Friendly Plane to be Built in Leipzig

Thu 1st May, 2025

In a significant development for the German economy, a new aircraft manufacturing facility is set to open at Leipzig Airport. The project, undertaken by Deutsche Aircraft, aims to produce an environmentally friendly short-haul aircraft that accommodates 40 passengers. This initiative is expected to create approximately 350 new jobs in the region.

The ceremonial groundbreaking for the new facility, which spans an area equivalent to eight football fields (60,500 square meters), took place recently. The first aircraft, designated the D328 Eco, is scheduled to begin production in January 2026, with a planned delivery in 2027. The facility will also include logistics centers, hangars, and administrative buildings, representing an investment of around 100 million euros.

The D328 Eco aircraft will utilize sustainable and synthetic fuel, boasting a reduced fuel consumption rate of approximately 14 percent compared to conventional aircraft. It is designed to achieve a range of 2,000 kilometers, making it a competitive option in the short-haul market. This new model is a modern adaptation of the Dornier 328, which was first developed in the 1990s.

Saxony has a rich history in the aviation sector, with local engineers previously developing the Baade 152, the first German passenger jet with a turbojet engine, in the 1950s. The return of aircraft manufacturing to Germany, particularly in Saxony, is seen as a positive sign for the regional economy, especially following the recent announcement of job cuts at Leipzig's hub.

Economic Minister Dirk Panter highlighted the importance of this project for Saxony's economic landscape, emphasizing that it represents a strong commitment to the region and its workforce. The establishment of the new plant at Leipzig Airport not only aims to rejuvenate the local economy but also positions Germany as a player in the future of sustainable aviation.
