Greece Issues Tsunami Alert Following Significant Earthquake

Wed 14th May, 2025

Greece has issued a tsunami warning for several coastal areas after a strong earthquake occurred off the island of Kasos. The earthquake, recorded at a magnitude of 5.9 by Greek authorities, struck approximately 48 kilometers southeast of Kasos, a small island situated in the Aegean Sea.

The Ministry for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection advised residents and visitors to evacuate coastal areas immediately due to the potential risk of a tsunami. The island of Kasos, which has a population of around 1,000, is located between the larger islands of Crete and Rhodes.

Seismological data from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) indicated that the earthquake's magnitude was slightly higher, recorded at 6.3. The quake occurred at a depth of 83 kilometers (52 miles), and tremors were felt in various regions, including parts of Egypt, Israel, and southwestern Turkey. The National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics in Egypt reported a magnitude of 6.4, but no significant damage or casualties have been confirmed in the region.

Greece lies on several tectonic fault lines, making it susceptible to earthquakes. This recent event follows a series of seismic activities earlier in the year, with over 18,400 minor earthquakes reported in the Cyclades archipelago, including the popular tourist destination of Santorini.

The Greek authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have urged the public to heed safety warnings while remaining vigilant in the aftermath of this seismic event. Emergency services are on standby, prepared to assist local populations as needed.
