Google has announced a temporary pause on the rollout of its AI-driven feature, 'Ask Photos,' which allows users to query their personal images using natural language. The company is addressing various issues related to this functionality and aims to release an improved version within two weeks.
The feature, part of Google's Gemini initiative, was first introduced at the Google I/O conference last year. It employs a specialized AI model designed to comprehend and respond to image-related inquiries posed in conversational language. Despite initial excitement around this innovative tool, its availability was limited, with only a small group of testers able to try it out.
Jamie Aspinall, the product manager for Google Photos, acknowledged existing problems regarding the feature's latency, quality, and overall user experience. He stated that the current version does not meet the expected standards and emphasized the team's commitment to enhancing the speed and accuracy of search results.
When 'Ask Photos' was initially launched, Google highlighted its multi-modal capabilities, claiming it could interpret the content of images and, if necessary, even read text embedded within them. This would enable the feature to generate relevant responses and select the appropriate photos and videos to display.
However, Google Photos already includes a text search function that has been operational since 2019, which allows users to find specific words and phrases within images. This has led to some confusion, particularly after Google recently announced an update allowing users to search for exact terms in images by enclosing them in quotation marks.
This is not the first time Google has encountered challenges with its AI functionalities. Previous instances include the AI overview for Google Search, which made erroneous claims about historical figures, and inaccuracies in image generation concerning sensitive topics. The company has had to retract and refine its AI features to address these inaccuracies.
In light of these ongoing challenges, Google continues to work on refining its AI capabilities to provide a reliable and effective user experience. The tech giant emphasizes its dedication to delivering high-quality products while learning from past mistakes to ensure better outcomes in future releases.
