Google Integrates AI Chatbot Gemini Live into Chrome for Windows

Wed 14th May, 2025

In a significant advancement for users of its services, Google has announced that its AI chatbot, Gemini Live, will soon be accessible not only through mobile applications but also via the Chrome browser on Windows desktops. This integration represents a strategic move to enhance user experience and accessibility.

Recent court documents, revealed during the ongoing antitrust proceedings against Google in the United States, confirm plans for this integration. Although the documents are heavily redacted, they indicate that Gemini Live will be incorporated into the desktop version of Chrome. Google is expected to officially announce this feature during the Google I/O 2025 event, scheduled for May 20-21.

Speculation about the inclusion of Gemini Live in Chrome has been circulating since late 2024, with additional indications found in Google's Chromium Gerrit. The feature is referred to internally as "Glic," an acronym for "Gemini Live in Chrome."

According to available information, Gemini Live will function as a widget within Windows 10 and 11, allowing users to adjust its size. It may be accessed through a button on the taskbar or an icon in the toolbar. Once activated, the assistant will remain operational in the system tray even when Chrome is closed, enabling continuous access.

Gemini Live's desktop version is expected to offer functionalities comparable to its mobile counterparts, facilitating conversations on various topics. Notably, it will have the capability to recognize and interact with the content displayed on the user's screen, a feature akin to the recently unveiled Copilot Vision by Microsoft for its Edge browser.

This move aligns with Google's broader strategy to make Gemini widely available across multiple platforms. In a recent Android showcase, the company announced plans to extend the chatbot's reach to smartwatches, vehicles, and television devices, enhancing its ecosystem. In contrast, companies like Microsoft, with their Copilot feature, currently have deeper integration within Windows systems.

While it remains uncertain whether Gemini Live will find its way to Apple's macOS, the current integration with Windows marks a pivotal step in Google's efforts to position its AI solutions at the forefront of technology.
