Google Abandons Plans for Data Center in Berlin-Brandenburg

In a significant shift, Google has decided not to proceed with the construction of a planned data center in the Berlin-Brandenburg area. This project, which had been in the pipeline for several years, was confirmed to be shelved by Ralf Bremer, a spokesperson for the tech giant.

According to reports, the decision comes after a thorough evaluation of various factors influencing the feasibility of the project, including market trends and the company's evolving business priorities. Bremer emphasized that while the Mittenwalde location, situated approximately 30 kilometers south of Berlin, will not be developed, Google remains committed to its operations in Germany.

Google continues to support the digital aspirations of Germany through its existing cloud regions in Berlin and Frankfurt, as well as its data center in Hanau. The company has been leasing space in multiple data centers operated by other providers in the capital region, a situation that appears set to continue.

In 2023, Google launched a large data center in Hanau, which has only seen the completion of one of its three planned construction phases thus far. Additionally, the company owns two more plots in the Frankfurt-Rhine-Main area, earmarked for future data center development.

The Frankfurt region is experiencing a surge in data center construction, bolstered by the proximity to the DE-CIX Internet exchange, one of the largest internet exchange points globally. This facility allows data center operators to transfer vast amounts of data with minimal latency, further enhancing the region's appeal for tech investments.
