German Backpacker Rescued After 12 Days Lost in Australian Outback

A young German woman, identified as Carolina Wilga, has been found safe after going missing for twelve days in the Australian wilderness. The 26-year-old backpacker had to resort to drinking from puddles to survive during her ordeal.

On Friday evening, Roger Cook, the Premier of Western Australia, confirmed the news of her rescue via social media, expressing relief that she was safe and sound. However, details about the circumstances leading to her disappearance remain unclear.

Detective Acting Inspector Jessica Securo, who leads the investigation, reported that Carolina was found exhausted and dehydrated but only suffered minor injuries such as cuts and bruises. Despite her challenging situation, Carolina's determination to survive shone through. She reportedly lost hope of being found but continued to fight for her survival by drinking from natural water sources and finding shelter in caves at night.

During the day, Carolina relied on the sun's position for navigation, aiming to head west in hopes of encountering people or a road. Her perseverance led to a fortunate encounter with a local farmer, Tania French, who spotted her while driving home with her caravan.

Carolina is currently recovering at Fiona Stanley Hospital in Murdoch, a suburb of Perth. After being airlifted from the remote Outback, she is receiving medical attention to regain her strength. Hospital representatives reported that while she spent the night under observation, her condition remains fragile as she processes the traumatic experience.

The harsh realities of her survival have begun to set in, as she contemplates the significant physical and mental strains she endured--surviving with limited food, battling the cold nights, and facing potential threats from wildlife.

Authorities initiated a search for Carolina after losing contact with her family. Earlier in the week, investigators discovered her Mitsubishi van, which had broken down in the bush, miles away from civilization. The vehicle, manufactured in 1995, had encountered mechanical issues, prompting Carolina to leave the van and attempt to navigate the vast area on foot.

Detective Securo noted that, despite the many trails in the area, it is easy to become disoriented without proper knowledge of the terrain. The van was equipped with solar panels and water, indicating that it was reasonably well-prepared for a journey into the Outback.

Looking ahead, Carolina has expressed a desire to continue exploring Australia. According to Detective Securo, she has many plans still to fulfill, including traveling along the eastern coast, which remains on her bucket list.
