Cancellation of Gergijew's Concert in Italy Following Criticism

Mon 21st Jul, 2025

A concert featuring Valery Gergijew, a conductor known for his close ties to the Kremlin, has been canceled in Southern Italy due to significant backlash. The decision was made by the management of the Royal Palace of Caserta amidst concerns over potential protests from Ukrainian organizations.

The concert was scheduled for July 27 as part of the 'Un'Estate da Re' music festival, held in the opulent courtyard of the palace near Naples, organized by the Campania region. The announcement of Gergijew's participation had sparked widespread criticism, prompting the Italian Ministry of Culture to publicly distance itself from the event. Officials expressed that hosting a conductor with such links to President Vladimir Putin could potentially turn the festival into a platform for Russian propaganda.

Julia Navalnaya, the widow of Alexey Navalny, the Russian opposition leader who died in prison, also voiced her concerns in an op-ed published in 'La Repubblica,' urging for the concert's cancellation. Gergijew, who is also the artistic director of the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg and the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow since 2023, has been a long-time supporter of Putin.

Since the onset of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, numerous international cultural institutions, including the Munich Philharmonic and La Scala in Milan, have severed ties with Gergijew due to his failure to publicly denounce the conflict. As a result, his presence at cultural events has become increasingly controversial.

The cancellation of Gergijew's concert underscores the ongoing tensions surrounding cultural figures associated with the Russian government and the broader implications of their participation in international events, particularly in the context of the war in Ukraine.
