Beloved Actor George Wendt from 'Cheers' Passes Away at 76

George Wendt, the iconic American actor best known for his role as Norm Peterson in the classic sitcom Cheers, has passed away at the age of 76. His family announced that he died peacefully in his sleep at home, though the cause of death has not been disclosed.

Wendt gained worldwide fame for his portrayal of the lovable barfly Norm, who was a regular at the fictional Boston pub from 1987 to 1993. The show captured the hearts of viewers and was a critical success, featuring a talented ensemble cast that included Ted Danson, Woody Harrelson, Kirstie Alley, and Shelley Long. Over the course of the series, Wendt received six Emmy nominations for his memorable performance.

In a past interview, Wendt described his audition for the role of Norm, emphasizing the need to embody a character who was always ready for another beer. Beyond Cheers, he enjoyed a successful career in both film and theater. Wendt appeared alongside notable actors like Robert De Niro and Annette Bening in the 1991 film Guilty by Suspicion. He also starred in the romantic sci-fi film Forever Young (1992) alongside Jamie Lee Curtis and Mel Gibson, and featured in holiday-themed comedies such as Santa Baby (2006) and Santa Buddies (2009).

Wendt was not only a television star but also a Broadway performer. He delighted audiences with his singing and dancing in the musical Hairspray, where he played Edna Turnblad, a role he cherished as a joyful departure from his previous work.

Born and raised in Chicago, Wendt was part of a large family, growing up with six sisters and two brothers. He is also the uncle of comedian and actor Jason Sudeikis, known for his roles in Ted Lasso and Horrible Bosses.
