Firefox Introduces AI Assistant for Tab Management

Wed 23rd Jul, 2025

Mozilla has launched Firefox version 141, featuring an innovative AI assistant designed to enhance the organization of tab groups. This new functionality builds upon the tab grouping feature introduced in version 138, allowing users to create tab groups effortlessly through a drag-and-drop interface.

With the AI assistant, users can now receive automated suggestions for relevant tabs to add to their groups, eliminating the need for manual input. This feature not only simplifies the process but also enables the AI to adjust group names based on the content of the tabs, making organization more intuitive.

Importantly, Mozilla emphasizes that this AI model operates locally on the user's device, ensuring that data such as tab titles and descriptions remain private and are not sent to external servers. This decision aligns with the company's commitment to user privacy and enhances the feature's efficiency. Users who prefer not to use the AI suggestions can easily disable this feature in the settings menu.

In addition to the AI assistant, Firefox 141 includes enhancements to the vertical tab sidebar, first introduced in version 136. Users can now resize the sidebar to their preference, with any moved tools and extensions automatically shifting to an overflow menu. Another new feature allows the address bar to function as a converter, enabling quick conversions of measurements, temperatures, time zones, and more. Results can be copied to the clipboard with a single click.

For Linux users, Firefox now operates with reduced memory usage and no longer requires a restart following updates via the package manager. Windows users will benefit from the introduction of WebGPU support, significantly speeding up graphics and machine learning computations. Support for WebGPU on macOS and Linux is expected to follow in the coming months, with Android support planned as well. Detailed technical information regarding WebGPU in Firefox is available in a dedicated blog post from the company.

Enterprise users will find that the Pocket policies in Firefox Home have been reinstated for compatibility reasons. The updated policies now refer to 'Stories' instead of Pocket, although the existing Pocket policies will remain in place. These policies allow administrators to customize the browser's homepage. Mozilla announced the discontinuation of the Pocket service in May.

Alongside these new features, Firefox 141 comes with numerous smaller updates and bug fixes, which are detailed in the release notes. The AI assistant for tab groups is being rolled out progressively, meaning users will receive the feature in stages.

Furthermore, Mozilla is launching a new website, transitioning from mozilla.org to firefox.com as the primary hub for downloading the browser. This new site will feature an overview of key functionalities, resource sections including a blog and release notes, and a platform for users to report bugs directly to the developers.
