Döbeln, Saxony - A distressing case involving seven sick piglets acquired from factory farming has culminated in a court ruling against a local farmer. The case, which began with a seemingly noble intention to rehabilitate the animals, ended with the farmer facing legal consequences.
The court proceedings took over three hours at the Döbeln District Court where Siegfried Degenhardt, a 47-year-old hobby farmer, stood accused of fencing stolen property. Prosecutors alleged that he purchased the piglets at an unusually low price of 25 euros each from a friend in May or June 2023, without any formal purchase agreement or notification of the transaction.
Veterinary officials later traced the piglets through their ear tags back to Elbland GmbH, a company notorious for its poor animal welfare practices, which had previously made headlines for inhumane conditions. Despite the company being unaware of the missing animals, the police acted swiftly.
On October 24, law enforcement conducted a raid and seized the seven piglets. During the operation, Degenhardt reportedly contacted the seller, expressing concern that he had been sold stolen goods.
In court, Degenhardt was questioned about his lack of suspicion regarding the low price. He claimed the piglets had various health issues, including umbilical hernias, and argued that in a large facility, they would have been euthanized. He felt they deserved a chance at life.
The presiding judge, Tom Schmitt, characterized the case as one based on circumstantial evidence. Ultimately, Degenhardt was sentenced to four months of probation and fined 800 euros. The judge noted that alternative interpretations of the case could exist, yet the ruling held firm.
Degenhardt expressed frustration over the outcome, emphasizing that he had already incurred losses while facing additional penalties. The fate of the piglets was even more tragic; they were euthanized by the authorities, according to Degenhardt's legal representative.
