Family Seeks Federal Assistance: German Brothers Held Hostage by Hamas for 600 Days

Thu 29th May, 2025

For 600 days, the families of Gali and Ziv Berman, two German-Israeli brothers, have endured unimaginable suffering and uncertainty. Since their abduction by the terrorist organization Hamas on October 7, 2023, the Berman family has been haunted by the question of when or if they will ever see their loved ones again.

Recent reports have added to their anguish, as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed that only 20 of the 58 hostages remaining in the Gaza Strip are believed to still be alive. The family received word in February that Gali and Ziv had been separated and injured during the attack but were confirmed to be alive at that time, marking the last known update on their condition.

The Berman family has been in a state of despair for over a year and a half. Their father, who is physically disabled, requires constant care, adding to the burden on the family. Liran Berman, the elder brother, has tirelessly campaigned for the release of his siblings and the other hostages, meeting with high-profile figures including US President Donald Trump and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Nevertheless, the global focus appears to be shifting toward military actions in Gaza and away from the plight of the hostages.

Liran emphasizes the necessity of military pressure on Hamas to facilitate the release of the captives, acknowledging, however, that a military operation alone may not be able to secure their freedom. As of now, eight Germans remain among the hostages.

Liran expressed gratitude for the support they have received from Germany, noting that the family has not received a clear commitment from the German government to act as a mediator in the situation. Given Germany's established connections in the Arab world and even with Iran, Liran believes that their assistance is crucial now more than ever.
