Faeser Cancels Syria Trip Amid Terror Threats

In light of credible information regarding a potential terrorist attack, Nancy Faeser, Germany's acting Federal Minister of the Interior, has canceled a scheduled visit to Syria. This decision was made in conjunction with her Austrian counterpart, Gerhard Karner, who was also part of the planned delegation.

The flight, arranged to depart from Jordan to Damascus, was set to facilitate discussions with key members of the Syrian transitional government and representatives from various United Nations humanitarian organizations. However, the decision to abort the trip was taken after receiving specific warnings from German security agencies about a potential threat to the safety of the delegation.

A ministry spokesperson indicated that the risks posed to the officials and the accompanying security personnel were deemed unacceptable. Authorities could not rule out that the threat was directed towards the German and Austrian representatives.

The visit, which was organized with heightened security measures, had not been publicly announced prior to its cancellation. The agenda included addressing security concerns and exploring options for the repatriation of Syrian refugees. Faeser had emphasized the need for swift returns of serious offenders and individuals deemed a security risk, who hold Syrian nationality.

Currently, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) has suspended decisions regarding asylum applications from individuals originating from Syria, due to the ongoing unstable conditions within the country.
